How To - Web Feature Service - Add Content to ArcMap

    ArcGIS Data Interoperability for Desktop

     

    To take advantage of web feature service (WFS) content from WeatherSentry®, you will need to have ArcGIS Data Interoperability for Desktop installed. You can install this extension from the ArcGIS for Desktop installer.

    Setting Up WFS in ArcCatalog

     

    Adding WFS content to ArcMap will require setting up the service in ArcCatalog before you can leverage the service in ArcMap:

     

    1. Open ArcCatalog.
    2. On the Catalog window, expand Interoperability Connections and double-click Add Interoperability Connection.

    3. On the Interoperability Connection dialog, click the Format browse button. This will open the FME Reader Gallery dialog.

    4. Select WFS (Web Feature Service) and click OK to close the FME Reader Gallery dialog.

    5. Ensure Format is set to WFS (Web Feature Service). Enter http://weather-services.telventdtn.com/basic/wfs_v1/wfs.wsgi? for the Dataset value.

    6. Click Parameters... to open the WFS (Web Feature Service) Parameters dialog.
    7. Fill in the following details:
      1. Enter http://weather-services.telventdtn.com/basic/wfs_v1/wfs.wsgi? for the URL value.

      2. Enable Use HTTP Authentication and enter the HTTP Username and Password with Basic authentication.

      3. In the Constraints section, click the browse button browse.png for Feature Types to open the Select Feature Types dialog.
      4. Select the feature types you want to add. Click OK.

      5. In the Constraints section, set Max Features to 10000 (our internal limit).

      6. In the GML Reader section, enable Use Old Reader for GML v3.1.1 and v2.1.2 Documents.

      7. Click OK to close the WFS (Web Feature Service) Parameters dialog.

    Adding WFS to ArcMap

     

    With WFS setup in ArcCatalog, you can now add layers to ArcMap:

     

    1. In ArcMap, click File > Add Data > Add Basemap.

    2. Select a Basemap from the list of options. We recommend Light Gray Canvas. Click Add.

    3. Select File > Add Data > Add Data.

    4. On the Add Data dialog, select Interoperability Connections from the pull-down menu.

    5. Select the data you want to add and click Add.

    6. Your WFS map will open.

    Troubleshooting

     

    Problem:

    Error Reading Interoperability Data

    This dataset appears to be invalid.

    Please verify that your settings or file contents are correct, and try again.

    Solution:

    You have set your Max Features variable too high:

      1. In ArcCatalog, right-click the interoperability connection you created above.
      2. Select Connection Properties...
      3. Click Parameters...
      4. Reduce Max Features to 10000.
